How to play a backgammon straight race

The backgammon straight race is considered to be one of the easiest forms of the backgammon game available and so is a good place to start for beginners. It is also referred to as the "pure race" and depends entirely upon the role of the dice. Basically, the player that rolls the highest and moves his checkers with careful consideration to the position of his opponent will win. The game is fast paced and exciting with very simple backgammon rules that apply.

The starting point of the backgammon straight race is the same as the standard set-up used in any backgammon game. The only difference in the backgammon rules is that the two pieces that are furthest from each player's home territory be played first. These checkers must reach the mid-point of the board before any other checkers can enter the game.

As with any backgammon game, the aim of the players is to move their pieces home as quickly as possible, and bear off first. This requires much concentration as the backgammon rules regarding capture are the same as in any other version of the game. Backgammon straight race enables novice players to familiarize themselves with the basic concept of the backgammon game without learning complicated strategy.

The backgammon straight race also enables beginners to concentrate on other factors once they begin to play backgammon. Once a player has successfully maneuvered past their opponent in any standard game, their only concern is to rush home and bear off. This means they are following what they learnt in the backgammon straight race. This is very useful for players that enjoy an online backgammon game as the speed of play is much faster than live.
