Explanation of a Blackjack Split

A blackjack split doesn’t involve ice cream or a banana but it is a sweet way to increase your blackjack winnings in the game of blackjack!

When the dealer deals you two cards with like value to start a game of blackjack the blackjack rules state that you can separate these cards and play them as two hands, each with equal wagers, against the dealer. This is known as a blackjack split.

A blackjack split can be helpful when you receive a starting hand that is too low to win you the game but so high that if you ask the dealer to hit you with another card you are likely to go bust. For instance, if you are dealt double aces or double eights it is wise to split. With double Aces a total of 12 isn’t enough to win the game and your likelihood of busting if you hit is extremely high. However, if you use your Aces separately as two elevens your likelihood of getting hit with a card worth 10 points for a blackjack is very high.

On the other hand, it is never a good idea to split fours or fives. Starting out with eight to ten points is a great hand in the game of blackjack so you shouldn’t break it up.
