How the Dealer Wins a Blackjack Game

If you’re interested in beating the dealer at blackjack, you need to familiarize yourself with the rules that dictate his blackjack game. Generally a dealer has two set plays which he must adhere to. You can find out which rules are being used by checking at the table if you’re playing in a live casino or searching for the rules online if you’re playing internet blackjack.

The most common rule for dealers in a blackjack game is the 17 rule. This stipulates that the dealer must stand when he obtains cards with a total of 17. Until this value is reached, he must continue to draw cards. The Ace in his blackjack hand is nearly always counted as eleven. For example, if the dealer holds Ace and eight his total is 19 and he will stand. However, if he has Ace and five his total is 16 so he must draw another card.

A less common rule variation in a blackjack game is when the dealer must hit with a soft hand valued at 17. A blackjack hand comprised of Ace, two and four, where the Ace is valued at eleven, is an example of a soft 17.

As you can see, the dealer has fewer choices in a blackjack game than the player does. So make sure you consider your options wisely in order to beat him at his own game.
