Finding the Right Backgammon Dice
When you're starting out in live backgammon, you need to find the right equipment for the job. When it comes to sourcing backgammon dice, one type is the recommended standard and is a must for anyone interested in playing in backgammon tournaments.
These backgammon dice are known as precision dice. There are two main differences precision dice have over their straight edged counterparts. The corners of the dice are rounded and the pips are inlaid rather than painted on. Precision dice come in various sizes, however most backgammon players prefer the half inch variety because of their ability to roll a higher number of times per throw. The second most popular choice of backgammon dice are the 7/16 variety which are slightly easier to pick up.
It is not recommended to use straight-edged dice on your backgammon board for several reasons. Firstly, most backgammon players worth their salt will refuse to play with any dice apart from precision backgammon dice. Secondly, straight-edged dice will skate and slide on the board instead of rolling. Their edges may also damage your backgammon board depending on the type of material it is made from. There is no reason not to use precision dice as they are relatively cheap at $5-$7 for a pair.
