GNU Backgammon: The Free Software for Backgammon Players

GNU Backgammon is a free software that analyzes and plays backgammon games and matches, which is being developed under the aegis of the GNU Project. As yet only beta versions of the GNU software are available to backgammon players so that they can test it, improve on it and report bugs. Though the Gnu software has been designed for the GNU system it is fully compatible with other operating systems like Windows and Linux.

GNU Backgammon has the expertise of champion backgammon players. At the highest settings it has a rating of 2000 on the First Internet Backgammon Server (FIBS), which is a benchmark used to rate and rank backgammon players. Over 6000 players have been tested on FIBS and the GNU software ranks fifth. It is expected to improve its ranking by the time it is ready for commercial release.

GNU Backgammon offers several useful features to backgammon players. The ability to save incomplete backgammon games for playing later is much appreciated. It maintains statistics of backgammon games played and won so that backgammon players can assess if their play is improving. The GNU software has a database of backgammon games that are used for training novice backgammon players. The most useful feature of the GNU software is its ability to analyze games. It uses neural networks to evaluate positions to varying depths to give cubeless values of contact and race positions.

GNU Backgammon is a very handy tool for all aspiring backgammon players. And since it is currently free they must not miss this opportunity to use it to improve their backgammon ability.
