Improve Your Game Using GNU Backgammon

GNU Backgammon is a computer application that is very popular among backgammon players. One of the features of the GNU software is that it can train players to improve their backgammon game. There are several tools available for training that are suitable for different levels of backgammon players.

The most elementary tool is the hint function. When in doubt the backgammon players can activate the hint function in GNU Backgammon and it informs the players the best move in the given situation. The backgammon players can then compare it with the move they were contemplating and correct their backgammon game. However the hint function is useful only to novice players.

The tutor feature of GNU backgammon is the most popular. Backgammon players set it to an error level appropriate to their expertise. Novice backgammon players use a higher error level and experts use a lower error level. As they play the backgammon game, the tutor warns them if they are making a mistake exceeding the set error level. The GNU software does not spell out the correct move but allows a player to replay that move. This way the backgammon players do not see the hint and are forced to think.

Serious players use the game analysis feature. After the backgammon game is completed it is saved appropriately and both the games record and annotation windows are opened simultaneously. The game can then be traced move-by-move with the correct play coming up in the annotation window for each move. Though this feature is the most useful one in GNU Backgammon, it has certain disadvantages. It is time consuming. Also the correction is not offered in real time, which is what most backgammon players want.
