Playing consulting Chouette
Consulting Chouette can be played at any time, so long as the addition of the consulting feature has been agreed before the game commences. This optional consulting rule is a popular addition as it enables Chouette players to be involved at all times, and so provides a more interesting Chouette game. It also puts further pressure on the box, and so makes it all the more challenging.
Consulting Chouette basically involves allowing the other Chouette players on the team to influence the decisions of any team member, including the captain. The decisions that can be influenced are always allowed with regards to the checker moves. In some versions, consultation from Chouette players can not be made on the doubling cube as it is considered that it would leave the game open to unfair advantages. In other versions, consulting can be made on every aspect of the game, including the cube. The captain can still exercise the right to go against the whole of his team if he wishes in any consultation situation.
There are two ways that consulting Chouette can be played. The first option is that Chouette players can consult from the first roll of the dice. This allows the team to have an impact upon the field from the very start. Another version is to allow consulting Chouette to commence after the first turn of the doubling cube, except for when automatic doubles are in play.
Beginning consulting in the Chouette game after the cube has turned prevents players from slow play; holding out against the doubling to try and score extra points. If you play the Chouette game which allows players to consult, make sure you agree the full rules first to avoid disappointment and prevent mistakes.
