Choosing Your Poker Chips

Playing a live poker game is a great pastime amongst friends and acquaintances. The first thing you need to consider when you're looking at hosting a poker game is purchasing poker chips.

Generally you can find a range of chips at online gaming stores and at local hobby and game shops. The amount of chips you need to purchase will depend on how many opponents you intend to face off against in your poker game. For three to four players, the recommended number of chips you should have in your poker game is 300. This increases to 400 for four to five players and to 500 poker chips for six to eight players. If you intend to host nine or more poker players, you should budget for around 800 chips.

Poker chips come in a range of designs and colors to suit every taste. You can choose from sophisticated patterns and color combinations or you may opt for the traditional colors and values. These are represented by white chips, which are valued at $1, red chips at $5, blue chips at $10, green chips at $25, black chips at $100 and purple chips at $500.

You should consider too which types of poker chips you like the best. The different materials chips are made from include plastic, clay and clay composite chips. The latter style chips make the same noise as live casino chips, giving your home poker tournament an added touch of authenticity.
