Internet Poker Terminology: Card Types

If you’re a poker fan, it’s essential for you to be comfortable with poker terminology. There are hundreds of words in the poker dictionary that are used to describe all sorts of poker situations you might come across. If you’ve ever played at an internet poker table, you’ve undoubtedly been exposed to some of the lingo that’s out there. Getting familiar with the words will help you better understand and succeed at your poker game. Here are several useful terms describing different cards you may encounter while you play poker.

An “action card” is the name given to a community card in an internet poker game that sparks big betting. This card is usually significant to at least two players at the table and thus raises the stakes of the game.

In internet poker, “blockers” are cards that help prevent players from making a winning hand combination. If, for example, there is a potential Straight on the table with a Q-K-A, a player who holds J-J in his pocket cards is holding “blockers.” This pair of Jacks limits the chances of a player obtaining the Straight because this Straight requires a Jack and somebody is already holding two of the four cards.

A “brick” in internet poker is a card that doesn’t give a player any benefit in the game.
