Poker Game Terms: “No Limit,” “All In”

Poker comes with its own dictionary. There are hundreds of poker game terms in common use, and an understanding of two of these terms, “no limit” and “all in”, is vital to players. Knowing if a table is “no limit” and when “all in” bets are allowed instructs players how to play poker in a particular game.

A “no limit” poker game doesn’t limit the amount that players can bet. In “no limit” poker, players have the freedom to raise a bet above the minimum by as much money as they want. In standard games, rules cap how much a player is allowed to raise.

Going “all in” in a poker game means that a player is wagering all of his or her chips on a hand. Risking everything means that if the player loses the hand, they will be out of the game. Players usually go “all in” when they do not have a lot of chips in comparison to other players. In this situation, players have nothing to lose, and chips to gain, by betting on a solid hand. In “no limit” games, players can go “all in” on the opening bet.

The next time you play poker, know your poker game by asking about these terms.
