Poker Strategy for Pocket Pairs

In Texas Hold’Em poker, pocket pairs, which occur when both of your dealt cards have the same value, can be both a blessing and a curse. Pocket pairs are difficult to manage because they indicate an advantage where there sometimes isn’t one. Knowing which poker strategy to apply to your particular pocket pair is crucial to playing this tricky hand wisely.

If you start out with a great pocket pair, like Aces or Kings, eliminate as many players as you can before the Flop is drawn. To execute this poker strategy, bet aggressively. High bets cause players with weak pocket cards to fold. This prevents them from receiving a lucky Flop that might beat your pair.

If you begin with a low value pocket pair, use a cautious poker strategy. Low value pairs from 6-6 to 2-2 are typically not enough to win a hand. If the community cards lean toward a Straight or Flush, and competitors are betting aggressively, it’s better to fold.

Remember that simply holding a pocket pair is not enough to win. Inexperienced players often forego proven poker strategy in the hopes of riding to victory on a simple pair. To avoid this, remember the poker rules – pairs are just one step above the High Card in poker rankings.
