The History of Casino Poker

Casino poker has a long and exciting history, from its mysterious origins to the phenomenon it has become today. Nobody is quite sure where the actual game of casino poker came from. It is first recorded as having been played in New Orleans in 1829. Some claim that it was passed down from the Irish game Poca, the German pochen, the French brelan and the Renaissance primero.

While the game was derived from several European card games, the casino poker that we know today received its true birth in America. Poker began to take shape on the gambling riverboats of the Mississippi River and along the pioneer trails American West, where it became a 52-card game that included the Flush. Civil War soldiers created unique versions of the game, like Stud and Draw poker. The Straight, wild card, split pot and community cards were also invented in 19th and 20th century America.

American soldiers, as they traveled the world in the 20th century, spread casino poker. Today, games like online Texas Hold’Em poker are some of the most popular in the world.
