What you need to know about playing in an online poker tournament

You might play in an online poker tournament because it is fun or you might play because you want to try and make more money. What ever your reason, you are going to need some poker strategy. There are two main factors that you need to keep in mind.

The first of these is that during an online poker tournament the art of domination is a big factor. Remember there is a poker buy-in to begin. The blinds can also be so high later on in the game that players with challenging hands will be all-in a preflop. It is for this reason that you want hands that will dominate those of the people that you are playing. We suggest that having high pocket pairs as they generally dominate over low-pocket pairs. These low-pocket pairs are essentially only good for stealing blinds and put you at a 50-50 while you are a 4.5:1 underdog if one or more of your opponents have a higher pocket pair than you do and still all you.

During an online poker tournament all your chips have a different relative value. Usually in a standard game of poker each dollar has an equal value; however when you play in an online poker tournaments the situation is a little different. When you start off, the first thousand chips that you make are always going to be worth more than the second round you make. You can not buy back into a tournament and you have to make sure that you have enough chips to survive. It is never a good idea to dive into the game at the very beginning; even if you win you may not be in a better off position since later on in the game you might be forced to gamble or risk losing by being blinded away.
