Purchasing a Backgammon Board

Finding a backgammon board that will give you an enjoyable backgammon experience is one of the first things new players need to do. However, unlike other sports, buying the most expensive equipment won't improve your backgammon game. For this reason, it is recommended that you purchase a standard backgammon board that will help you learn the ropes before you shell out for a top of the range board.

A minimum standard of backgammon board should have a 21 inch or 53 centimeter playing surface. These are usually available in imitation leather with a green felt playing surface. The checkers should be around 45 millimetres tall. This is your standard backgammon set. However, many standard sets do not include precision dice. Don't even attempt to play backgammon with straight edged dice if you get them with the set. Instead, budget a little extra to purchase a pair of precision dice and start playing backgammon correctly from Day One.

If you're still not sure what type of design you prefer or the type of material your backgammon board should be made from, why not visit a local backgammon tournament and check out what other people's boards look like? If you see a board you like, ask the owner where he purchased it from. Most tournaments are sociable affairs and you should easily find someone pleased to tell you about his latest bargain.
